Van & caravan caution. NorthLink (Scrabster / Aberdeen patterns) or Pentland Ferries from Gills Bay. Check operator guidance for your outfit. Confirm NorthLink or Pentland Ferries vehicle length rules. Mainland Orkney A-roads are generally MH-friendlier than Hebridean single-track, but rural lanes still need care.

Natural first pause; confirm bay length and height barriers on arrival.

Ring of Brodgar / Stones of Stenness

Fuel, water and food before remoter stretches.

Kirkwall and Stromness hubs

Keep the day short enough that you reach a booked overnight in daylight.

Return corridor

Leave buffer time for weather, ferry queues or traffic.

Overnight, campsites & car parks

Soft advisory only. Rules and permissions change. Motorhomes are not covered by Scottish wild-camping rights under the Outdoor Access Code.

Booked campsites first

Book peak season early. Opening months vary. Check each site directly for vehicle length and facilities.

Waste & water points

Plan cassette and grey-water empties. Never empty chemical waste in public toilets or burns.

Check on the day

Signage changes after busy seasons. If a car park is full or newly restricted, move to a booked site.

Unique things to look out for

Walks, waterfalls, ruins and wildlife notes that pair well with a staged van tour.

Walks within your limits

Choose waymarked low routes around Orkney when ridges are in cloud or wind is high.

Waterfalls & burns

After rain, signed falls and gorge paths can be excellent van-crew breaks. Stay on official paths.

Ruins & history

Heritage boards and ruins near Orkney reward a slower afternoon. Check opening days seasonally.

Wildlife look-out

Seabirds on cliffs in season; seals in sounds; farmland birds. Respect nesting areas and farm gates.

Beaches & shores

Soft advisory only. Check tides, access and whether your outfit fits the car park.

Coastal sands or shores

Walk beaches where public access and car parks suit your outfit. Soft sand verges can trap vans.

Harbour edges

Short harbour strolls are often kinder for large motorhomes than remote track ends.

Local food

Soft advisory food ideas. Popular places book out in summer. Carry backup supplies for remoter evenings.

Local cafés near Orkney

Opening hours shrink outside peak season; carry backup supplies.

Pub classics & seafood where coastal

Book popular rooms on sunny Saturdays.

Farm shops & bakeries

Excellent for stocking the fridge between campsites.

Hints for holiday goers

Scotland travel tips

Soft advisory notes for motorhome and caravan crews. Conditions vary by place and day. This is not medical advice. Always check the Met Office, Traffic Scotland and local signage before you travel.

Winter road trips

  • Temperatures often sit near or below freezing, especially in the Highlands and further north, and wind chill on exposed coasts can feel sharper still.
  • Pack warm layers, hats, gloves, blankets, a charged phone, torch and simple cold-weather kit for viewpoint stops and overnight stays.
  • Check your vehicle is winter and season ready: leisure battery, heating, water systems, tyres and screen wash all matter more when nights are long and cold.
  • Prefer daylight on remoter single-track roads, leave extra stopping distance, and confirm forecasts before high or exposed stretches.

Summer days

  • Typical summer days often sit in the teens to low 20s C, with occasional warmer spells. UV can still be strong even when the air feels cool.
  • Always pack sun protection, drinking water and light cover for necks and shoulders on walks and ferry queues.
  • Ventilate motorhomes and caravans carefully on bright days, use blinds or vents, and never leave pets or children in a closed hot van.
  • Carry backup water between sites; popular services and taps can queue in peak holiday weeks.

Midges and biting insects

  • Midges and gnats are common from late spring into early autumn, especially in the Highlands and on the west coast in still, damp conditions.
  • Keep doors and screens closed at dusk, use a suitable repellent if you wish, and choose breezier open ground when midges peak.
  • Long sleeves and trousers help at evening site walks; after bites, cool clean skin and over-the-counter soothing products many travellers find useful (follow label advice).
  • If swelling, breathing difficulty or other concerning symptoms appear, seek appropriate medical help. This page is guidance only.

Hiking and countryside kit

  • Wear long trousers on many Scottish paths to reduce scrapes from stinging nettles, thorns and rough vegetation.
  • Ticks and other creepy crawlies appear in grassy and woodland edges in season; stay on paths where you can and check skin and kit after walks.
  • Sturdy footwear with grip beats fashion shoes on wet rock, boardwalks and muddy farm tracks.
  • Soft outdoor common sense: tell someone your rough plan, carry a map or offline route, respect livestock and leave no litter.

Vehicle readiness

  • Harsh Scottish winters and brighter summer spells both stress habitation systems: heating, gas, water, 12V and damp checks before you go save ruined holiday days.
  • A habitation check or Season Ready visit is a gentle way to confirm the living side of your motorhome or caravan before Orkney miles.

Tips for Orkney

  • Island wind can make cool days feel colder; secure awnings and loose kit at overnight stops.
  • Ferry schedules and weather windows shape the tour; build a soft buffer day into longer stays.

Soft advisory only. Habitation Checks Scotland shares holiday-goer tips to help you prepare; we do not accept liability for weather, wildlife, medical issues or routes you choose. Check forecasts and official guidance on the day.
